HOME DID YOU KNOW EUROPE’S HIGHEST SETTLEMENT

EUROPE’S HIGHEST SETTLEMENT

Ushguli village in Svaneti region, (2300 m) is highest settlement in Europe. It located at the feet of Shkhara

Shkhara is one of the higher Caucasian summits. Unlike many other villages high in the mountains it is still inhabited and thriving.

Svaneti is known for its superb house-towers, most dating back to the 12-13th centuries, which spring up from the rocky valley floor like miniature castles.

Considered the most dramatic and impressive region of the entire Caucasus, hiking in Svaneti is the finest in Europe, if not in the world. From the Cross Peak directly above Mestia you can see the magnificent twin peaks of Mt. Ushba (4710 m), the snow pyramid of Mt. Tetnuldi (4974 m.), the beginnings of Georgia’s highest mountain, Mt. Shkhara (5068 m.), with Mt. Elbruz, Europe’s biggest (5642 m.) lurking just behind Ushba.
