CHRISTIANITY IN GEORGIA (326 AC)

 

the conversion of Georgia to Christianity is associated with St. Nino. Georgia was converted to Christianity in year 326 and became one of the first countries in the world to adopt Christianity as the state religion.

 

Day 1 arrival in Tbilisi

Day 2 Tbilisi- capital of Georgia

 

Liturgies in Sioni cathedral (XII c), there is kept the Grapevine cross of St. Nino, - the major symbol of Georgian Orthodox Church.

 

Discover Tbilisi, more than 1500 years old city, in it’s Religious, historical and architectural diversity.

Main sights:

  • Metekhi church, Abanotubani - famous sulfur bathhouses.
  • Narikhala fortress, the main citadel of the Tbilisi with the superb panoramic view of the city.
  • Meidani, Anchiskhati Church (6-th c), the oldest basilica in Tbilisi.
  • Mtatsminda ( Holly mount) and Mamadaviti Church (X c);

Day 3 Mtskheta ancient capital and heart of Georgia

 

Mtskheta is Georgia’s most sacred pilgrimage city ( UNESCO World Heritage Site.)

  • Jvari monastery (VI c) which is Georgian for “cross”. Jvari is said to be the site where St. Nino planted the sacred cross to symbolize Georgia’s acceptance of Christianity in the 4th century
  • Monastic complex Shio-Mgvime (Vic), was founded by an Assyrian hermit monk named Shio.
  • Samtavro monastery – (the ruler Mirian and his wife Nana, the first to accept Christianity from St. Nino, are buried). In the churchyard lies the grave of St. Gabriel, one of Georgia’s most esteemed saints.
  • Svetitskhoveli - (which means “the Life-Giving Pillar) one of the principle cathedrals of Georgian Orthodox. According to Georgian hagiography, Christ's robe is preserved in the Cathedral

Day 4 – Kakheti

 

  • David Gareji a rock-hewn monastery complex founded in the VI century by David (St. David Garejeli), one of the thirteen Assyrian fathers.
  • The Monastery of St. Nino at Bodbe, holds the remains of St. Nino, Equal to the Apostles, who brought Christianity to Georgia

Day 5 – oldest Monasteries of Kakheti

 

  • The monastic complex of Nekresi (IV-VII and XV centuries), the founder of the monastic complex is one of the Assyrian fathers, St. the martyr Aviv Nekres
  • Alaverdi - one of the most important medieval monuments in all of Georgia. Assyrian father Joseph of Alaverdi founded the monastery in the 6th century. In the monastery you can visit the monastery cellar and try the monastic wine
  • Ujarma fortress (III c) , other site where St. Nino planted the sacred cross to symbolize Georgia’s acceptance of Christianity in the 4th century

Day 6 - Georgian Military Highway and Stepantsminda

Follow of cross pass of Georgian Military Highway, we get to Stepantsminda

 

Main Sights:

  • Aanuri fortress (XVI-XVII cc)
  • Follow to the Georgian Military Highway - ski resort Gudauri; Mineral Waters and travertine
  • Cross Pass at 2395m is the highest point on the Military Highway
  • Stepantsminda - great place in Mtkheta-Mtianeti, unique nature and buildings. Mount Kazbegi - highest peak of Eastern Georgia.
  • Gergeti Trinity Church (XIV c) - is situated at an elevation of 2170 meters, under Mount Kazbegi

Day 7 - Borjomi Gorge and Akhaltsikhe

 

From Stepantsminda we are going to southern Georgia – Samtskhe Javakheti - Historically one of the most important cultural centers of Georgia.

 

Main Sights

  • Green monastery (IX c) The Chitakhevi St. George's Monastery In the 16th century, this monastery was raided. During this time dozens of monks were killed, The blood which remained on the stones thrown into the river Chitakhevi, belong to the monks. Bloody stones are spread along almost the entire length of the river running through the territory of the monastery.
  • Borjomi - resort town is famous because of Borjomi mineral water and Borjomi Park;
  • Church of St. Seraphim of sarov

Day 8 – Cave towns of Samtskhe Javakheti


Vardzia, Georgia’s unique cave city continues to amaze people from all over the world. It can freely be called the Honor of Georgians

 

Main Sights

  • Vardzia (XII c) - a rock-carved fortress stretched over 500 meters. Underground fortress eventually had 13 levels constructed with natural caves and contained over 600 rooms,
  • Sapara Monastery – (X c) – amazing place hidden in the mountains and in the forest
  • Rabati castle (XIII c) - 18th century Akhaltsikhe Fortress is often called the symbol of tolerance - A church, mosque, minaret, synagogue, as well as Jaqelebi Palace, a historic museum, old baths and a citadel, have been restored on the territory of Rabat Castle.

Day 9 Trip to West Georgia - Kutaisi

 

Kutaisi - biggest city of West Georgia was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Colchis as early as the second millennium BC.

Main Sights:

  • the Katskhi pillar is a natural limestone monolith located at the village of Katskhi, It is approximately 40 metres (130 ft) high, and overlooks the small river valley. Katskhi church
  • city tour in Kutaisi, Bagrati Cathedral (XXI c) UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 10 Natural monuments of Imereti

 

Beside of main cathedral of Imereti, today we visit amazing natural monuments

 

Main Sights:

  • Motsameta monastery – (XI c) Motsameta means martyrs. According to the legend the monastery was constructed on the place where Muslim aggressors executed David and Konstantin Mkheidze, Georgian princes, who refused to accept Islam
  • Gelati Complex - Main cultural and intellectual centers in Georgia for a long period; UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • National park of Sataplia and Sataplia Cave, famous for fine speleothems and the dinosaur footprints.
  • Martvili monastery ( VII – X cc) – (name Martvili from the word “martyr”)
  • Martvili Canyon - enjoy the scenery, waterfalls and take a boat trip in the river with deep green color.

Day 11– back to Tbilisi

Main Sights

  • Ubisa - St. George's Church and Monastery complex (IX c)
  • Uplistsikhe - ancient cave town, dating back to the 1 millennium BC .
